Director Statement

When the battle for democracy began, we all looked to the international community and hoped that someone would come save us. It wasn’t long before we realized that we had to save ourselves. It is now a historical time in Myanmar’s history as citizens from all over the country have united to rise up against the merciless military junta. As the dictatorship is in a position they have never been in before; struggling to hold on to their power, this documentary uncovers the extraordinary fortitude and incredible will of the people of Myanmar in our plight for freedom.

My purpose with this documentary short film is to shed light on a country often forgotten, provide a mirror for the people of Myanmar, to see that we are the heroes of our story and finally, to inspire viewers worldwide to strive for a world marked by democracy and peace. This documentary short serves as a powerful reminder for viewers that their actions do make a difference, and that when united, our strength is boundless.

Director Biography

Kali is an award winning documentary filmmaker from Myanmar with a goal to make a film that serves as a call to hope and action, shedding light on Myanmar’s plight while inspiring its people and viewers worldwide to strive for a future marked by democracy and peace.

Kali’s homeland, Myanmar, has long been mired by conflict and political unrest. After a brief period of democracy between 2015-2020, the country was thrown back into civil war after the military overthrew the democratically elected government. Her goal with her current project, We Bloom, in Spring, is to showcase the power of collective uprising and the critical role that women are playing in the resistance.
