Our Stories
Directed by Elizabeth Gomez
In the heart of San Francisco, nine Trans Latina women tell the history of ElLa through their own stories of survival, sisterhood and resilience. Revealing how an organization became a sanctuary and helped them reclaim their power and redefine their lives.
Director Statement
Being a minority in the United States feels a lot more daunting when you add immigrant to the mix. When you combine Latinidad, being trans, and an immigrant – the titles start piling up. People begin to identify you by your otherness to the point of losing yourself.
“Nuestras Historias” is a project I felt called to do because seeing nine women be so sure of their identity despite the outside labels was a story I wanted to share. Through my interviewing of each women individually, I began to realize how each of their stories interwove into one. The story of belonging. This film captures the essence of the belief that anything is possible with community.
As a filmmaker rooted in community storytelling and as an immigrant myself, this film is close to my heart. By capturing the resilience and sisterhood of Ella Para Trans Latinas through each of the women’s trajectories, my hope is that the audience will feel called to accept their own identities and those of others.
Director Biography
Elizabeth Gomez [she/her] is a Mexican, DACA dreamer, filmmaker and storyteller. Her work focuses on themes of community building, connection, longing and home. Gomez’s storytelling style, as both director and editor, is heavily influenced by the storytelling practices of her Mexican and Indigenous roots; she sees her stories as vessels that contain the spirits of the communities and subjects she documents. Her reverent, sacred stories become spaces of refuge for both viewers and subjects to connect.
Gomez most recently directed “Action is Currency: Protecting Trans Futures” a follow up project to “Nuestras Historias” detailing how allies can use their privilege to fight against transphobia. She was the First Assistant Director on Roberto Fatal’s “En Memoria,” which screened in competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival Shorts film program.
