About KPBS Explore
Local content is the heart of KPBS. Since our founding 65 years ago, we’ve been committed to telling the stories that define San Diego and the people who call it home. These stories matter for the way they deepen our sense of place, create shared experiences, and reflect the rich tapestry of our region.
The KPBS Explore Local Content Project launched in 2012 with the goal of bringing more original local programming shaped by and for our community to our digital and broadcast platforms. Since then, we’ve worked with more than 35 local producers on new ideas for programs that make us think, help us dream, and keep us connected.
KPBS Explore considers submissions of completed films, podcasts and broadcast and digital series year-round. Every two years, KPBS Explore puts out a community-wide call to content creators, filmmakers, and audio storytellers across the region. We offer seed funding and a chance to develop your concept for distribution across KPBS platforms, including broadcast, digital, and streaming.
In this program:
Love All
From public courts to the US Open: the story of nine Filipino American siblings and their grandmother, “Mamita,” on an extraordinary journey of family, identity, and breaking barriers in the world of tennis.
Young Lions
In jazz, the music lives on through those who pass it down, one player, one lesson, one late-night jam session at a time. Gilbert Castellanos, San Diego’s trumpet virtuoso is part of that living tradition. With the founding of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, he’s created a bridge between generations where young musicians learn to carry the torch of jazz forward.
La Mùsica Nuestra (Proof of Concept)
La Música Nuestra (POC) follows Rafa and Luis, two brothers from Michoacán who migrate to the United States in search of work, carrying with them the memories and music of home. Through their original song, “Juré Regresar,” a heartfelt reflection on departure and the longing to return, the film explores how Mexican regional music travels beyond borders, connecting generations and unexpected communities—including a woman who discovers Mexican music later in life and a San Diego dance studio keeping norteño traditions alive, one step at a time.
Insights into Art with Alessandra Moctezuma:
Hosted by curator Alessandra Moctezuma, this series offers a glimpse into the ideas and processes of artists across the San Diego–Baja region through intimate studio visits. Blending interviews with close-up process footage, it highlights diverse media and themes—from migration to social justice—while demystifying contemporary art.
Crossing La Lìnea (originally Border Crossings)
Crossing La Línea traces centuries of encounter, conflict, and kinship on the US-Mexico border, from Kumeyaay lands to today’s double wall. Through stories told from the monument where the border was born, learn how a line on the map became the hidden root of millions of American family trees.
Home Restaurant: Recipe for Opportunity
The Art of Sewing
Chicana textile artist Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski turns discarded materials into one-of-a-kind wearable art from her Barrio Logan studio – one material, one finished piece per episode.
