Get to know the Director Emily Lerer

Raised a Jewish, queer, woman in an amusement park-adjacent midwestern suburb, Emily’s work explores the messiness of femininity through unabashedly raw, gritty stories.

Her cervical cancer dramedy, PUNCH DRUNK, premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Hollyshorts Film Festival and toured internationally at festivals including the renowned Fantasia Film Festival. Her screenplays have advanced in the Austin Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Final Draft Big Break Contest, and Big Apple Film Festival. She has made the Red List top 20 Thriller Scripts as #7 and WeScreenplay Competition top 5% of the 60,000 scripts submitted.

Training as an actor in her teens and early twenties, she shifted gears into directing. During her time in New York, Emily worked for award winning directors at renowned theaters, collaborating with new playwrights, and re-imaging classic works, across the off-broadway scene.

Spending the past seven years learning ins and outs of television from pre-production through post, Emily has worked with show runners including John Wells and Lena Waithe. Her television post production experience spans network, cable, and prime time for Warner Brothers, Showtime, Fox, A.B.C., H.B.O., B.E.T., Annapurna, Freeform and Netflix on shows including GREY’S ANATOMY, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS – ORIGINAL SIN and SHAMELESS.

A proud alumnus of the Sundance Directing Television Intensive, Alliance of Women Directors Directing the Directing the Actors Lab. Emily is a member of Women in Film, Array crew, SMPTE, The Television Academy and the Producers Guild of America. Her fervent hope is to make Gloria Steinem, her cat, proud.
